Since April 1, 2026, Najwa Musa Kaunda has been unlawfully apprehended and held by the SPLM-N-Al Hillu/Tasis Armed Coalition Forces (Tasis Coalition) initially in Kauda Town, Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan, without charge. Currently, her location remains unknown. Given the deteriorating conditions in the region, the ongoing fighting, and Najwa’s continued disappearance, there are significant concern about her health and safety.
SIHA Network released a statement on May 7, 2026, calling for her immediate and unconditional release by SPLM-N-Al Hillu/Tasis Coalition.
Najwa is a formidable peace and security activist and a long-time advocate for Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan communities. She has participated in multiple delegations and peace talks, representing the very same SPLM-N-Al Hillu in negotiations with the Sudanese government. As a frontline woman rights activist, she always cared deeply for her community and its people.
We at the SIHA Network continue to demand her immediate release and hold the SPLM-N-Al Hillu/Tasis Coalition responsible for her overall safety and well-being. We continue to highlight the deplorable treatment and detention conditions faced by Sudanese civilians—men, women, and children—in the South Kordofan/Nuba Mountains, that remains ongoing in the midst of Sudan’s brutal conflict.
We urge human rights organisations and the broader international community to pressure SPLM-N-Al Hillu/Tasis Coalition for Najwa’s urgent release, along with all the women, children, and civilians unlawfully detained in the region.
