The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network demands the immediate release of Najwa Musa Kaunda, a Sudanese women’s rights activist, civil society leader, and enduring peace campaigner from the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan.
On April 1st, 2026, Najwa was apprehended by the military intelligence of the SPLM-N-Al Hillu, part of the RSF-led “Tasis Coalition,” in Kauda town, which serves as the headquarters of Al Hillu forces, following her efforts to resolve tribal conflicts in Debi area of the Nuba Mountains.
Her incarceration is profoundly concerning and illustrates the ongoing persecution of women on the frontlines in several regions of Sudan. We at SIHA are deeply alarmed by reports from Najwa’s family that she has not been seen since her detention on April 1st. Her family has also raised serious concerns regarding her deteriorating health condition. Faith‑based groups, including the Nuba Mountains Council of Churches and other organisations, have repeatedly requested to visit her but their requests have been denied.
Najwa Kaunda has devoted years of her life to humanitarian efforts, advocating for women’s rights and engaging in community peacebuilding in the Nuba Mountains. She is one of the women leaders who contributed to the establishment of humanitarian relief programmes and women-led organisations in the conflict-ridden region.
Najwa has participated in the SPLM-N delegation for peace negotiations with Sudan’s previous regime. In 2016, she spearheaded the execution of the United Nations action plan to eradicate the recruitment of child soldiers in regions governed by SPLM-N.
Through the years, Najwa has maintained strong ties with her community in the Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan and in Blue Nile, dedicating substantial efforts to promoting peace, enhancing women’s participation, and safeguarding the rights and security of people in the Nuba Mountains and South Kordofan. She has consistently opposed domestic violence, child marriage, and female genital mutilation (FGM) and other manifestations of violence against women and girls.
The SIHA Network demands the immediate and unconditional release of Najwa Kaunda and holds the SPLM-N leadership responsible for her safety.
SIHA urges all warring parties to stop all forms of arbitrary detention, intimidation, criminalisation, and reprisals against women, human rights defenders, and leaders within their territories.
We call on the international community and human rights organisations to exert substantial pressure on the SPLM-N and Tasis Coalition for Najwa’s release, the release of all civilians detained without charges, and to end all forms of violence against civilians, particularly against women and girls, in the regions currently under their control.
