Despite the Ethiopian Constitution’s affirmation of gender equality and the existence of laws designed to protect women, violence against women continues to rise at an alarming rate. This crisis is perpetuated by distorted interpretations of religious teachings that justify harmful practices, alongside significant gaps in accountability and weak enforcement within the justice system. The failure to address these violations through proper mechanisms has also increased the risks and burdens faced by women’s rights defenders.
Since November 2024, Addis Powerhouse, Article 35, and the SIHA Network have been working collaboratively on the campaign “From Catcalling to Femicide”, aimed at protecting women’s rights and promoting safety from gender-based violence. As part of this initiative, we hosted two key consultations in July 2025, bringing together religious leaders, civil society organizations, government officials, and legal experts.
During these discussions, religious leaders strongly affirmed that no faith legitimizes violence against women, emphasizing that religion must stand for women’s dignity, equality, and justice. Civil society representatives, legal professionals, and state actors echoed the need for accountability, urgent legal reforms to prevent violence against women, and community education to secure women’s meaningful participation in public life.
Stakeholders also underscored the urgent need for a coordinated national response to gender-based violence in Ethiopia. They identified policy delays as a major barrier, stressing the importance of immediately adopting and rigorously implementing relevant laws. Participants emphasized that individual efforts alone cannot prevent such violence and called for sustained engagement, coordinated action, male involvement, community solidarity, and strong collaboration among all stakeholders throughout the year.
The Ethiopian New Year is a moment of hope and renewal, but true progress requires us to confront the failures of the past year. Women’s rights remain among the most neglected issues in our society, and it is our collective duty to defend justice, dignity, and humanity.
As we enter this New Year, we call on all citizens, law enforcement bodies, and community and religious leaders to act, challenge gender inequality, and work tirelessly to protect women’s rights through sustained and meaningful change.
May the year ahead be one where women live free from fear and oppression, realize their full potential, and participate equally in building a just and prosperous Ethiopia.

ከለከፋ እስከ ግድያ: የሴቶች መብትና ደህንነት እንዲጠበቅ የቀረበ የአዲስ ዓመት የፍትህ ጥሪ
ኢትዩጵያ ውስጥ ምንም እንኳን ህገ መንግስቱ የፆታ እኩልነትን ቢያረጋግጥም፣ የሴቶችን መብት እና ደህንነትን ማስጠበቅ የሚያስችሉ የተወሰኑ ህጎች ቢኖሩም፣ በተግባር ግን ከለከፋ እስከ ግድያ ሃገሪቷ ውስጥ ሴቶች ላይ የሚደርሰው ጥቃት ከጊዜ ወደ ጊዤ በአሰቃቂ ሁኔታ እየጨመረ መቷል።
በሃይማኖት ሽፋንና በባህላዊ ልምድ የሚሰራጩ የተዛቡ መረጃዎች ጨቛኝ ለሆኑ ስርዓቶች ክፍተትን በመፍጠር፣ የሴቶችን መብት በመጣስ እንዲሁም የስነ-ልቦናዊና አካላዊ ጥቃቶችን በማባባስ ላይ ይገኛሉ። በተጨማሪም የፍትህ ሥርዓት የአፈፃፀም እና የተጠያቂነት ክፍተት፣ በሴቶች ላይ የሚፈጸሙ የመብት ጥሰቶች እንዲበራከቱ እና በሴቶች መብት ተሟጋቾች ላይ ከፍተኛ ተጽዕኖ እንዲያሳድሩ መንገድ ከፍቷል።
እኛ በሴቶች መብት ላይ የምንሰራው አዲስ ፖወርሃውስ፣ አርቲክል 35 እና ሲሃ ኔትወርክ ከ2017 ጥቅምት ጀምሮ በጋራ ዘመቻችን #ከለከፋእስከግድያ የሴቶችን መብት ለማስከበር እና ግንዛቤ ለማስጨበጥ የተለያዩ የውትወታ ስራዎችን ፣ ውይይቶችን በማድረግ የቆየን ሲሆን፣ በ2017 መጨረሻ ላይ ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የሚገኙ የሃይማኖት መሪዎች፣ የሲቪል ማህበራት ድርጅቶች፣ የመንግስት አካላት እና የህግ ባለሙያዎች የተሳተፉባቸው የተለያዩ ዝግ ምክክሮችን አካሂደን ነበር።
ባደረግነው ምክክር የሃይማኖት መሪዎች በአንድነት በመቆም፣ ምንም ዓይነት ሃይማኖታዊ አስተምሮ በሴቶች ላይ የሚፈጸም ጥቃትን እንደማይደግፍ እና ሃይማኖት ለሴቶች ክብር፣ እኩልነት እና ፍትህ መሰረት ሆኖ ማገልገል እንዳለበት ገልፀዋል። የሲቪክ ማህበራት እና የህግ ባለሞያዎችና መንግስታዊ ከሆኑ ድርጅቶች የተወጣጡ ተወካዮችም ሴቶች በነፃነት የሚኖሩበት ማኅበረሰብ ለመፍጠር ተጠያቂነትን ማረጋገጥ ወሳኝ እንደሆነ እና በሴቶች ላይ የሚደርስን ጥቃት ለመከላከል የሚያስችሉ የህግ ማሻሻያዎች እንዲደረጉ፣ እንዲሁም የህብረተሰቡን ግንዛቤ በመገንባት፣ የሴቶችን ሁለንተናዊ ተሳትፎ ማረጋገጥ አስፈላጊ መሆኑን ገልጸዋል።
የምክክሮቹ ተሳታፊ ባለድርሻ አካላት በኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ለሚከሰቱ ጾታን መሰረት ያደረጉ ጥቃቶች አንድ ወጥ የሆነ ሀገራዊ ምላሽ በአስቸኳይ መሰጠት እንዳለበት እና የፖሊሲ ማጽደቅ ፣መተግበር ስራዎች እጅግ አስፈላጊ መሆኑን አጽንኦት ሰጥተው ገልፀዋል። ከየዘርፉ የተወጣጡት ተሳታፊዎች ጾታን መሰረት ያደረጉ ጥቃቶችን ለመከላከል በግል የሚደረግ ጥረት በቂ አለመሆኑን ጠቅሰው፣ ዓመቱን ሙሉ ንቁ ተሳትፎ፣ የተቀናጀ አካሄድ፣ የወንዶች ተሳትፎ፣ የጋራ ማህበረሰብ ርብርብና ጠንካራ ቅንጅት እንደሚያስፈልግ አረጋግጠዋል።
አዲስ ዓመት፣ አዲስ ተስፋና አዲስ ምዕራፍ ነው። ይሁን እንጂ፣ ያለፈውን ዓመት ችግሮች ሳንመለከት አዲስ ገጽ መክፈት አይቻልም። በተለይም የሴቶች መብት መከበር ጉዳይ፣ እንደ ማኅበረሰብ ብዙ ያልሠራንበት ጉዳይ መሆኑን ሁላችንም ልንገነዘብ ይገባል።
የሴቶች መብት መከበር የፍትሕ፣ የክብርና የሰብዓዊነት ጉዳይ ነው። በመሆኑም፣ በዚህ አዲስ ዓመት ሁሉም ዜጎች፣ የህግ አስከባሪዎችና የማኅበረሰብ እና ሃይማኖት መሪዎች የሴቶችን መብት ለማስከበርና የሥርዓተ-ፆታ እኩልነትን ለማስፈን ንቁ ተሳትፎ እንዲያደርጉ ጥሪ እናቀርባለን።
አዲሱ ዓመት ሴቶች ያለ ፍርሃት፣ ጭንቀት እና ጭቆና በነፃነት የሚኖሩበት፣ ሙሉ አቅማቸውን ተጠቅመው የሚሰሩበትና ለሃገር ዕድገት ፍትሃዊ አስተዋፅኦ የሚያበረክቱበት ዓመት ይሁን።
