This Briefing Paper, titled “Lost Gains: Somalia’s Regression from Women’s Empowerment to Systemic Oppression,” aims to support and strengthen feminist resistance movements and collectives across Africa, empowering them to advance gender justice while remaining inclusive and resilient against the rising attacks from anti-rights movements. The paper traces the trajectory of the feminist movement in Somalia, showcasing its early successes as well as the increasing backlash against the rights of women and girls. This backlash is evident in the repeal of crucial protective policies and the introduction of regressive laws in recent years.
