ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) is a civil society coalition bringing together grassroots women’s rights organizations from Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Uganda. Established in 1995, SIHA aims to strengthen the capacity of women’s rights organizations in the Horn of Africa, contributing to the empowerment of women and advocating for effective change. SIHA operates as a regional platform for mobilizing activists, vulnerable groups, and marginalized women, men, and girls to challenge the root causes of problems faced by women and girls in the Horn of Africa Region. More information about SIHA is available at www.sihanet.org

BACKGROUND OF THE CONSULTANCY

Sudan’s history of protracted conflict has resulted in widespread human rights violations, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and deep-rooted inequalities. Women and girls bear the brunt of this conflict, facing increased risks of violence, exploitation, and displacement. Yet, despite these challenges, feminist networks and grassroots women’s groups are vital forces advocating for peace, social justice, and gender equality in Sudan. Their courage and mobilization address the unique needs of women and girls impacted by the conflict.  Unfortunately, without proper documentation, feminist contributions risk being overlooked, undermining their hard-won political gains.

SIHA’s “Feminist Peace for Sudan” project amplifies the voices and contributions of grassroots women’s groups during the conflict. We highlight their resilience, resistance to violence, and peacebuilding efforts. This video is a key part of the project, alongside initiatives documenting feminist initiatives, researching the economic impact of conflict on women, and advocating for gender-inclusive peace processes.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONSULTANCY

The “Women’s Resilience during Conflict and Peace Efforts” video showcases the inspirational stories of Sudanese women demonstrating resilience in the face of conflict and actively contributing to peacebuilding. It will utilize a storytelling methodology that captures diverse experiences and highlights the specific challenges faced by women activists. Through this, the video aims to promote inclusivity, solidarity, and a safer space for feminist activism in Sudan.

Specific Objectives:
  • Record compelling stories of women’s resilience, coping mechanisms, and peace efforts throughout the Sudanese conflict.
  • Center women’s perspectives on peacebuilding and inclusivity.
  • Foster a sense of solidarity and collaboration among women activists across Sudan.
  • Employ creative media tools to work within the constraints of Sudan’s shrinking civic space.
  • Serve as a record of violations faced by women activists.
  • Contribute to a safer, more supportive environment for feminist activism.
METHODOLOGY

SIHA seeks a skilled videographer to create a video employing storytelling methodology. This will illuminate the experiences of women selected from diverse conflict regions, ages, and socioeconomic classes. They will be chosen based on their activism and peace efforts within their communities. Interviews, footage of their daily lives, and potentially re-enactments of key events will bring their stories to life. The video will also spotlight the challenges confronting women activists in Sudan, such as harassment, intimidation, and violence.
